Celebrating Storytelling Week 2023

The rise of independent bookshops

On a bleak winter’s day a few weeks ago, there was some rare, good news on BBC Radio 4’s flagship Today programme.

It came in the form of a report that contrary to expectations, more independent bookshops were opening up across the country since the pandemic – and that public libraries were seeing an increase in users.

When times are tough, there’s nothing quite like the escapism offered by an engrossing book.

Importance of Storytelling

It’s never too early to start reading to children – and this forms part of what teachers call their ‘cultural capital’. This is defined as the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours and skills which a student can draw upon to demonstrate their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence. It is said to be one of the key ingredients a student will need to be successful in their career and in society.

Storytelling is also a vital business tool. Every organisation has multiple tales to tell – and with news organisations affected by ever-tightening budgets, there has never been a better time to get that content into the public domain.
