Can AI replace a creative designer? A behind the scenes look at creative logo design

5 minute read

Imogen Belton

With the sudden explosion of generative AI, it’s tempting to think that branding is now just a matter of typing a few keywords into a prompt. We’ve all seen the results; you can get a bunch colourful icons in under a minute for next to no cost. But when you’re looking for a bespoke creative logo design, the results shouldn't centre around a quick fix solution - it’s about whether a computer program can understand your business well enough to represent it.

With this in mind, we take a look at the pros and cons of AI vs graphic designer.

The evolution of the quick-fix logo

It is worth noting that the concept of ‘instant’ branding isn’t technically new. Logo generators and stock templates have existed for decades, and the designs we see AI churning out today aren’t all that dissimilar from some icons of the past. There will always be a time and a place for these low cost, automated options, however, if your goal is long term strategic branding with a conceptual foundation, then a dedicated creative partnership is likely what you require to move beyond the template look. We pride ourselves on being branding experts Devon-based, but our clients have regional, national and global brands.

Why creative expertise matters

The primary limitation of AI is that it operates on patterns, not purpose. When we work with you on a branding project, we begin with brand discovery and storytelling. This is a deep-dive process into your ‘why’: the history, the reason, and the future of your business. Conceptual and creative logo design is the foundation of telling your brand story in Devon (or wherever you are connecting with your audiences).

While AI generates a logo based on a keyword searches like ‘modern logo design’ or ‘fresh logo design’, it will struggle to create a logo based on your brand’s values, ethos, target audiences. This is where creative designers and branding experts have the edge and it’s easy to see and feel the difference between AI vs graphic designer created logos.

Our creative team (branding experts in Devon) will create a brand story that uses emotional intelligence to connect with your specific audience. Design is a psychological tool; it’s about how a specific font, image, graphic, shape or colour shade makes a customer feel. Software lacks the empathy to understand those human nuances and, as a result, AI logos are often one dimensional.

Industry research and the risk of generic branding

A logo does not exist in a vacuum. When we carry out a branding project, we carry-out industry research and competitor positioning to ensure your brand stands out rather than blends in.

A big risk of using AI is its lack of individuality. Because AI models are trained on existing data, they tend to produce generic mashups of what already exists. This can lead to lack of originality – where your logo looks suspiciously like a hundred others – and this can be key to a brand’s success in the marketplace.

What is strategic branding?

Strategic branding is the alignment of your visual identity with your long- term business goals. It is about considering the full brand system and not just seeing the logo (for example) as a single entity. The best branding experts Devon has to offer will consider real world application examples, ensuring your brand looks as professional on a tiny digital favicon as it does on large format print, digital, and signage.

AI often struggles with file limitations and scalability problems. You might get a pretty JPEG, but without the vector files, your logo will pixelate the moment you try to put it on a storefront or a vehicle wrap. Below is a list of some of the assets we will provide the client with when creating a logo for them:

  1. Vector files -These files are essential, unlike standard images, vectors use mathematical paths, meaning they can be scaled without losing any quality.
  2. High-resolution raster files -These are for everyday use where vectors aren’t supported (like Word docs or social media).
  3. Secondary logos – In some cases, to ensure  your logo works in different spaces, we may supply you with a primary and secondary logo, the secondary logo could be a slightly different layout, e.g. left aligned or stacked, or it could be a reduced version of the main logo where the descriptor has been removed or it used an acronym as opposed to the full business’s name.
  4. Icon/favicon– In the ever-growing digital world, these assets are invaluable when it comes to creating a website and setting up social profiles.
  5. Colour profiles for print and digital – Colours can look very different on a screen than they do on paper, and very different on coated paper than they do on uncoated. We provide logo artwork for every occasion, from CMYK and SPOT colours, to RGB and RAL colours, and don’t forget MONO versions.
  6. Guidelines – To maintain consistency, we can provide you with guidelines which will outline the colour palette, logo clearance rules, visual no-go’s etc. We can also expand on this and create a full visual identity for you.

Can an AI-generated logo be copyrighted?

Another potential pitfall to consider (when thinking about the pros and cons of AI vs graphic designer created visuals) is copyright. Under current UK law, an AI-generated logo can be protected by copyright, but how that protection works depends on how the logo was created.

It’s best to check the UK Government intellectual property guidance and the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 (CDPA) and the UK Government’s Copyright and Artificial Intelligence 2024 policy document for detailed information.

AI vs graphic designer

We all know AI design tools can dramatically speed up workflows, reduce repetitive tasks, and generate ideas quickly, often complementing or sparking human creativity and allowing designers to focus more on strategy, brand storytelling and the big picture.

Where AI struggles with originality, emotional depth, cultural nuance and storytelling, creative designers thrive. This means AI Is unlikely to fully replace creative designers whose lived experience, human insight and contextual understanding produce work which tells your story. Investing in creative logo design is about more than producing a recognisable symbol for your brand; it’s about building a futureproof and unique brand identity that encapsulates your brand story.
